In the design brief, function and durability were mandatory. That is not to say that, in meeting the brief, aesthetics were overlooked. The structure and selection of materials combine to give it a fresh and modern look. Aluminium trims powder coated to match the facade tiles (fixed with ARDEX Optima) is one of many indications of the attention to detail evident in this project.
Originally, only floors in the kitchens and communal areas were to be tiled. However, with durability and serviceability considerations in mind, the architect extended the tiled floors by a further 800 square metres. In the previous building the floors were tiled with a flexible two-part rubber adhesive to accommodate the movement associated with new slabs. However, for this project the adhesive was changed.
Graham Reymond, Director of Westside Ceramics (tiling contractors) explained that with a tight schedule it was necessary to have minimal down time between trades. Being fast setting and as flexible (if not more) as a two part rubber adhesive, ARDEX X 56 was the logical choice. Additionally, tiler fixers on this project observed that ARDEX X 56 was less prone to shrinkage compared with most two-part rubber adhesives.
ARDEX’s commitment to product development sees yet another first - ARDEX X 56, an adhesive that is both fast and flexible - making it truly the first of its kind. ARDEX STS 8 mixed with Ardion 90 was used for the balconies.
